It all started with a tweet in 2019: "Dogecoin might be my fav cryptocurrency, it’s pretty cool.”. Elon, many years prior, had become acquainted with the creators of the cryptocurrency, two software engineers who decided it would be a funny joke to create a Shiba Inu represented payment method (as cryptocurrencies were uncommon back then), and promised to help them promote their currency, but was it just a favor or also a genius plan?

After this tweet, people started speculating that the billionaire was hinting at the fact that he was planning to allow Tesla cars to be purchased using Dogecoin.

This could not be more untrue. Little did everyone know, Musk had bought many coins and wanted to see how much money it would make him after publicly complimenting it on Twitter.

It is still unclear the number of coins he actually owns, but it is speculated that he owns a modest 36 billion, as there is one wallet that owns ⅓ of the total digital currency in circulation. After that, the hype died down, but Musk had done a gargantuan service to the currency.

Elon hadn’t stopped tweeting about it until 2021, when, before appearing on Saturday Night Live, he tweeted about Dogecoin multiple times, including a post in January of a "Dogue" magazine that was designed to imitate Vogue (he should’ve been part of the marketing team at that point).

Dogecoin dropped 36% the morning after his appearance on the comedy show 😐

Just days after Musk joked about Dogecoin on SNL, the SpaceX CEO booked a mission to the moon that would be funded entirely by Dogecoin. "SpaceX launching satellite Doge-1 to the moon next year," Musk tweeted on May 9, 2021.

Last year, the CEO of the company managing the DOGE-1 mission, Samuel Reid, confirmed that the mission is still in the works.

His big efforts were not appreciated by one of the Doge creators, Jackson Palmer, who said he sees Musk's interest in Dogecoin as a tactic; a means to "latch onto communities" in an effort to "absorb them into his cult of personality." yikes… To which he clapped back by saying his 12 year old son has done better coding. Elon does seem to have a good relationship with the other creator, Billy Markus.

Today, his love for Dogecoin has not faded, even after lawsuits and controversies. In april, he changed the iconic blue bird logo of Twitter, with the dogecoin dog. But this week, he has been accused of insider trading and price manipulation of the cryptocurrency.

The real question is, will we ever find a love like Dogecoin and Elon’s?
